Astro Buddies: Travel Light, Learn Deep, and Keep the Night Sky Bright

Discover the Stars — and Each Other — with Big Sky Wonder

In a world that never seems to slow down, Big Sky Wonder’s Astro Buddies program invites you to pause, look up, and reconnect — with the cosmos, your camera, and your community. Designed for the curious amongst us, Astro Buddies is more than a night tour. It’s a chance to experience the magic of astrophotography, travel more sustainably, and become a guardian of New Zealand’s night skies.

Group Travel That’s Good for the Planet

The Astro Buddies experience begins with a shared journey. Instead of driving separately into the night, participants travel together in one vehicle — reducing emissions and light pollution from vehicle headlights. Fewer cars on the road means a smaller footprint and darker skies to work with once the cameras come out.

It’s a small change, but one with impact. When we choose to share transport, we’re not just making smarter travel choices — we’re showing that community-based tourism can lead the way in protecting our planet.

Learn About Light Pollution — and How to Fight It

Astro Buddies includes more than just photography pointers and scenic stops. At each session, we dive into the science and significance of light pollution — a growing environmental issue that impacts wildlife, human health, and our ability to see the stars.

You’ll discover how simple changes — like dimming outdoor lights at home, using warmer bulbs, and shielding garden lighting — can make a big difference. And by understanding how urban glow affects our skies, you’ll be better equipped to advocate for dark sky preservation in your own neighbourhood, town, or city.

Safety, Camaraderie, and Creativity

For many, heading into the night alone with camera gear can be daunting. That’s where the Buddies part comes in. Travelling and shooting in a group provides safety in numbers — and a chance to connect with fellow creatives from all walks of life. Whether you’re a solo traveller, a local night owl, or a visitor new to astrophotography, you’ll feel supported and inspired.

The shared experience often leads to new friendships, unexpected insights, and a sense of belonging — under the same stars we all share.

A Meaningful Takeaway

Astro Buddies is about more than capturing great shots (though you’ll certainly get those too). It’s about shifting how we move through the world — choosing shared transport over solo travel, protecting the environment through small daily actions, and sparking conversations about what we stand to lose if we lose our dark skies.

We hope you’ll leave with photos you love, and with a new lens on your role in protecting our planet — one lightbulb, one journey, and one starlit memory at a time.
