ITINERARY:
We’ll pick you up around 0830.
- Scenic Drive: Your adventure begins with a stop at the famous Sheffield Pie Shop, a much-loved local institution and the perfect place to enjoy morning tea before heading into the mountains.
- Kura Tāwhiti: Our next stop is the remarkable Kura Tāwhiti (Castle Hill), a breathtaking landscape of towering limestone boulders scattered across the alpine basin. Rich in cultural significance and internationally recognised for its unique geology, it’s a paradise for photographers, walkers and nature lovers alike.
- Moana Rua: Continuing west, we’ll pause at the tranquil waters of Moana Rua (Lake Pearson), where the surrounding mountain reflections create one of the region’s most peaceful viewpoints.
- Explore Arthur’s Pass Village: In Arthur’s Pass Village you’ll have free time to explore, browse local shops or enjoy lunch at your leisure surrounded by spectacular alpine scenery before stretching your legs on the easy Devil’s Punchbowl Walking Track. This rewarding 2km return walk leads through native beech forest to one of New Zealand’s most impressive waterfalls, plunging over 130 metres into the valley below.
- Return to Christchurch via Otira Viaduct: Before returning to Christchurch we’ll stop at the iconic Otira Viaduct Lookout, where you’ll enjoy panoramic views of this remarkable piece of engineering and, if you’re lucky, spot the mischievous alpine kea that call the area home.

Choose our optional extended itinerary and finish your adventure with an early dinner at the legendary Blue Pub in Methven. A favourite with locals, skiers and travellers alike, this iconic country pub is renowned for its welcoming atmosphere, hearty meals and authentic Kiwi hospitality.
After leaving Arthur’s Pass we’ll travel through the Canterbury high country to Methven, where you’ll have time to relax over dinner before making the scenic return journey to Christchurch.
It’s the perfect way to unwind after a day exploring the mountains—and to experience another classic slice of Canterbury before heading home.
